This question is your best opportunity to prove you are the best candidate for the job. The key is to discover what they are looking for so you can tell them why you are the best fit. Since you’ll be competing against many other seasoned professionals, you need to articulate why your qualifications make you the only person for the job.

Let them know that because you did [blank] in your last job, here is how you can do [blank] for them in this job. Connect the dots for them and show them why you are the best choice.

If you were in computer software sales in your last job, but now you’re interviewing for a job in manufacturing sales, then show them how your past software sales skills will enable you to work for them in manufacturing sales.

Find out what their problems and paint points are.  Every company has problems.  Then show them that you are a solution to their problems and talk about how you can solve them.

Once they see that you know what you are talking about, they will become interested in the value you can bring to their company.

Answering “Why Should We Hire You” is a question you can expect to get near the end of the interview.  Employers seldom lead with this question, but instead save it for the end.  They will only ask you this question if they are considering you for the position.  So if they ask it, then you’ve got them on the hook and now all you have to do is reel them in .

You will need to do some extensive research to know what the company is looking for. The best place to get this information is the job description because employers leave all kinds of clues in there. DO THIS when answering: Why should we hire you?

  • Prove that you understand their problems and can help solve them.
  • Talk about your understanding of their business, competitors, and challenges in the industry.
  • Tell them how you have been successful before. Let them know that in your last job you were faced with similar problems and you solved them by doing [blank] and then explain how you can do [blank] for them. When you connect the dots like this and demonstrate your understanding of their business problems they will see you as the obvious solution to their problems.

DON’T DO THIS: 

  • Don’t give a vague answer.
  • Don’t tell them: “Because I’m the best.”
  • Don’t’ tell them: “Because you’re hiring.”
  • Don’t answer their question with a question.
  • Don’t be arrogant with your answer.
